Yamaha Jazz Experience Workshops for Teachers, 2011
The first year of each two-year Yamaha Jazz Experience programme is our national teacher improvising workshop tour, which took place this year in October/November.
What is it?
A one-day workshop, led by a top Yamaha jazz artist of international standing and a leading jazz educator, which visits UK cities.
Who is it for?
Teachers (classroom and instrumental) and music leaders who are new or fairly new to jazz and improvising and who work with 11-18s; students of grade 6-plus.
Who led it this year?
Leading jazz educator and broadcaster Richard Michael worked alongside Yamaha artist, jazz flautist and sax player Geoff Warren (who collaborated closely with Graham Collier in the eighties and is former professor of jazz flute at the Royal Academy of Music). Geoff, a very experienced leader of jazz masterclasses and workshops, for all abilities, made his very welcome debut with the Jazz Experience team in 2011. This was the first time we'd worked with Geoff and everyone was amazed and delighted at the calibre and energy of Geoff's contributions to the workshop tour, including some superb improvising pieces. We're all very excited that our workshop participants were able to work with a world-class jazz flautist and superb jazz composer and arranger like Geoff!
Benefits?
New confidence, skills and some suggested milestones for your own development in improvising, as well as teaching ideas for immediate use.
Each workshop ran from 10:00-16:00 and dates and details were as follows:
Week 1:
Thu 27 October 2011: Bolton Music Service, Greater Manchester
Fri 28 October: Cumbria Music Service, Carlisle
Week 2:
Wed 2 November 2011: Seal Hayne, Newton Abbot, Devon
Fri 4 November: Bull's Head Jazz Club, Barnes, London
