Young Scottish Jazz Musician 2011 wins Yamaha masterclass with Peter Ind

Yamaha UK has awarded a prize of a one-to-one masterclass with Yamaha Jazz Experience patron Peter Ind to Ruaridh Pattison, the winner of the 2011 Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year competition. Ruaridh, a 19-year-old alto sax player from Kinross, impressed the judging panel with his soulful performances of Little Melonae and Tears Inside.
The competition, whose finals took place on 29 June 2011 at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow, is now in its fifth year and a collaboration between the Scottish Jazz Federation and the Glasgow International Jazz Festival. The event is sponsored by Creative Scotland and the Carntyne Trust, with media sponsors Jazz UK, part of Jazz Services. The whole event was broadcast live on BBC Radio Scotland's The Jazz House, with host Stephen Duffy.
In addition to the Peter Ind masterclass, provided by Yamaha UK's education department, Ruaridh also received £1,000 for career developent, a BBC Radio Scotland The Jazz House session, gigs at both the Glasgow and London Jazz Festival and professional biography and photographs.
After a performance by last year's winner, saxophonist John Fleming, Dennis Rollins, leading jazz trombonist, composer and educator, joined Stephen Duffy on stage to announce the winner of the 2011 competition on behalf of the judging panel, which also included Yamaha UK's music education manager Bill C Martin; Amy Pearce, associate director of Serious and London Jazz Festival; and freelance jazz journalist, Jazz UK, Rob Adams.
