Trinity Guildhall Primary Whole-Class Instrumental & Vocal Teaching Conference

Trinity Guildhall hosted a very well attended (400+ delegates) conference in London on 28 & 30 November 2007. The conference sought to examine whole-class teaching, particularly at KS2, with day 1, at London South Bank's Purcell Room, focussed on 'Addressing The Issues', and day 2, at the ExCel in London's Docklands.
Organiser, Nick Beach had said: "...Wider Opportunities challenges the way we think about children's musical experience." That was certainly in evidence, with some excellent approaches on show across both days, covering both singing and instrumental teaching. I was particularly taken with Keith Swanwick's keynote, in which he very persuasively promoted the idea of 'fluency first' and of the 'Pied Piper' model for leading and inspiring children in music. Both these key elements were certainly evidence among the various 'Inside the Classroom' demonstration lessons.
